Getting Toxic Chemicals Out Of Your Life—Laundry Detergent

Our new series entitled Getting Toxic Chemicals Out of Your Life–will highlight everyday which contain toxic chemicals.  The idea is to provide readers information on the toxic chemicals and product alternatives that perform just as well but without the toxic substances.  This post looks at laundry detergents, they are NOT all equal and many contain excess chemicals that do not make your clothes any cleaner but will irritate your skin and contain endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs).

We encourage our readers to use the Environmental Working Group  as a resource to check if your laundry detergent contains toxic chemicals.  Unfortunately, federal regulations do not require companies to provide consumers with comprehensive product labels.  The below chart details toxic chemicals to avoid in laundry detergents:

We recommend using fragrance free soaps and detergents.  Many toxic chemicals are present in scented items and frankly the scent is not necessary to cleaning your clothes.  The following is a list of laundry detergents that received an “A” rating from the EWG and can be found in your local supermarket or on Amazon.
